About me

I'm Semil Jain, an enthusiastic Software & Cloud Engineer with a strong passion for Systems. Currently, I'm pursuing my Masters in Computer Science at the University of Utah. My true joy lies in crafting and deploying robust backend services on the Cloud, transforming intricate challenges into elegant solutions.

Throughout my journey, I've made impactful contributions in diverse roles at prominent organizations like Intuit Mailchimp, BrowserStack, and Quantiphi Inc. Recently, I am more involved in climate science research, delved into system performance analysis, and embraced cutting-edge serverless technologies where my work has earned recognition through publications and academic projects.

I find immense satisfaction in witnessing the real-world impact of my solutions, and I'm driven to create technology that not only solves problems but also enhances lives.

Experience

  1. Research Assistant, Flux Research Group

    2022 — Present

I contributed to CloudLab profile development for climate models, fostering accessibility and engagement for citizen scientists. I also aided in creating a user-friendly portal for climate experiments. Under Dr. Robert Ricci's guidance, I researched system variability and its effects on reproducibility, leading to a 14% performance improvement and a published paper. Additionally, I experimented with Serverless Systems, enhancing benchmarking accuracy and customizing the SeBS suite.

Skills Showcased: Cloud Computing, Research, Systems Programming, Kubernetes, Docker, Performance Benchmarking, Shell Scripting

  2. Systems Engineering Intern, Intuit Mailchimp

    May 2023 — Aug 2023

I performed a successful Proof of Concept (POC) by migrating on-premise servers to AWS cloud via Kubernetes Deployments, utilizing Docker, Intuit's IKS cluster, Jenkins, and MSaaS platform. This effort enabled a seamless 100% server relocation. Additionally, I automated production-metrics tracking, integrating data from various sources into a dynamic Grafana dashboard, reducing manual intervention by 95%. Skills Showcased: Amazon Web Services(AWS), Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins, Shell Scripting, Grafana, Looker, Leadership

  3. Software Engineer, BrowserStack

    2021 — 2022

As a core member of the App-Live engineering team, I spearheaded the development of new features like Capture Screenshot, Webview Inspect, Geo-Restriction, and Assistive Touch & App Settings, increasing customer count by nearly 60% in a year. I optimized existing features using Redis PubSub and AWS services, raising service availability from 99.0% to 99.6%. I also reduced product downtime, improved SLAs for customer and production issues, and mentored interns, facilitating their smooth transition to full-time team members. Skills Showcased: Micro-services, Ruby-on-Rails, Node.js, Redis, Async programming, Amazon Web Services(AWS), Shell Scripting, Leadership, Mentoring

  4. Platform Engineer, Quantiphi Inc.

    2019 — 2021

As an Engineer for Liberty Mutual Insurance's OEM project, I designed and deployed multiple microservices in a cloud-based setup, simplifying motor insurance policy bookings for brands like Honda, Kia, and Maruti. I orchestrated these microservices using Spring Boot, DynamoDB, AWS SQS, and AWS ECS, automating 94% of the platform's processes. I also led a team in developing the Replay Scheduler, reducing failures to 0%, and integrated a Business Rule Management System and GC (by TCS) to enhance configurability and minimize deployments in the insurance domain. Skills Showcased: Backend API Development, Java, SpringBoot, DynamoDB, Pub-Sub Model, Amazon Web Services(AWS), Google Cloud, Jenkins, Leadership, Mentoring
